カーライルは「現代における本当の大学はたくさんの本（コレクション）だ」と言いました。これに対して皮肉なコメントが付け加えられたことがありました：「そしてそれを読む者が誰もいない」

To fail to draw uon their vast riches,or to draw upon them but slightly and as it were on compulsion,is for the young student of ambitious intellect the most tragic of blunders.

それらの本が持つ莫大な富から学びそこなうか、あたかも強制されたかのようにいやいやわずかに一部だけを学んで終わることは野心的な知性を持つ若い学生にとって悲劇的な最大のあやまちです。

The student must also reflect.

学生はまた読んだ内容について「思索」しなければなりません。

Reading is of small avail if it is unaccompanied by thought.The same may be said of observation.At bottom what is important is what we ourselves do with the data we receive.

読書は思索を伴わなければ小さな効用しかありません。観察についても同じことが言えます。結局大事なことは私たちが得たデータを用いて自分自身が何をするか・・・です。

If we do nothing with these data,we can have no ideas of our own,nothing of our own to say,nothing to write.

もしこれらのデータを用いて何もしないなら、自分自身の考えを持つことは出来ないし、自分のものとして発言したり書いたりする何物も持つことは出来ません。

We are,intellectually,like seafaring men,who range, according to Cardinal Newman,"from one end of the earth to the other"; John Henry Newman ( 1801 – 1890)

私たちは精神的には「地球の果てから果てまで探検する」航海者に似ています（枢機卿ニューマン）；

but the multiplicity of external objects, which they have encountered,forms no symmetrical and consistent picture upon their imagination:

they see the tapestry of human life,as it were on the wrong side,and it tell no story.

彼らが見ているのは人間の諸活動の雑多な絵であって、あたかも裏返しに見ているようで、それは何のストーリーも語りません。

They sleep,and they rise up,and they find themselves,now in Europe,now in Asia:
